LaserCat has previously been released on the xbox 360 indie games marketplace in April 2011 where it has received a high user rating and several awards from various websites. The PC version adds achievments to the existing game.
Making of info:
LaserCat was inspired by classic multi-screen adventure games such as Jet Set Willy on the ZX Spectrum and Citadel on the BBC Micro home computers. It was designed to be a more casual experience than either game though, with unlimited lives, warps around the map and few pixel perfect jumps required easing the difficulty.
The plot elements came together pretty quickly, a result of mixing the Tale of the Owl and the Pussy-cat and the incredibly basic plots that retro games tend to have. It was a lot of fun writing dialogue and story sequences using the characters and basic premise, given the abstract setting and simple characters, but I feel that a bit of humour comes through as a result (even though too much of it relies on parody or pop-culture references)
A lot of the game's appeal is a result of iterative tweaking and redesigns based on feedback I received while the game was in playtest on the Xbox 360 indie games service, it was great to hear what people felt about the game at various stages and take it into consideration.
Inspired by random quiz sections in games like Earthworm Jim and Banjo Kazooie, the Trivia questions were a fairly late addition to the game, as an extra layer of challenge to collecting keys. I found them to be a fun way to break up the gameplay a little, as well as providing another area that I could do some writing and add a few more gags.
Hope you enjoy the game, feel free to send me feedback if you liked it or not!
