From us at Galactic Goat Games:
We wanted to make a platformer that really drives the player along. A platformer that lets you really get into the flow of a level. In order to do this we tried to make the main character handle more like a real physical object with more inertia than most platformers. We designed the levels mostly around dodging, jumping and generally avoiding obstacles and enemies while keeping up the flow.
So don't get put off if you feel the handling is a bit awkward at first, if you keep going you'll soon share that feeling of continuity, flow and control and find yourself in the fight for those record times!
